Info about Approaches

Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® is a therapeutic approach to the healing of trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine and is supported by research. It is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized. Animals in the wild utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy arousal associated with defensive survival behaviors. We, as humans, have this too!

—                -SE® employs awareness of body sensation to help people "renegotiate", rather than re-live or re-enact trauma.

—                -SE's guidance of the bodily "felt sense," allows the highly aroused survival energies to be safely experienced and gradually discharged, over time.

—                -SE may employ touch in support of the renegotiation process.

—                -SE “titrates” experience (breaks down into bite size pieces), rather than evoking catharsis - which can overwhelm the regulatory capacity of the nervous system.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy is a relational and often playful approach to therapy that seeks to build or co-author, the Preferred Identity Stories of ourselves.  We usually consult a therapist when we are struggling with Problems that are threatening to take over our lives and at times, our self-identity has become occluded by the Problem's version of ourselves.

Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy (BCST)
As of July 2023, I am registered as a craniosacral therapist, which is a hands-on, touch-based modality that works to support autonomic nervous system regulation.
Pre and Perinatal Psychology (PPN)

This approach is a gentle, non-cathartic, bio-physiological approach as memories from this early time are encoded in the lower brain regions responsible for sensorimotor and emotional processing, called implicit memory, and are pre-verbal, so must be accessed through the felt sense of the body, in the present time, in slowed down way and in the safety of relationship.

Ethically and legally, anything you say in the context of our therapeutic relationship remains confidential.  No information will be shared with another person unless you have given written authorization.  This includes family members, your family physician, psychiatrists, lawyers and insurance professionals.
